A pesar de la heroica intervención del arquero barcelonés Xavi Carrillo, que fue declarado jugador del encuentro, la selección mundial de futbol no pudo con una correosa República de Irlanda que, aunque empezó perdiendo, consiguió empatar el encuentro 2-2 y acabo batiendo al rival en los penalties por 3 a 2.
